Daytona Beach International Airport Hosts Coffee with a Cop

There’s nothing like having a good conversation over a cup of coffee. That’s why Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) and officers from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO) invite passengers and community members for coffee and conversation Wednesday, Oct. 4, between 9 and 11 a.m. to celebrate national Coffee with a Cop Day. The event will take place in the airport’s art gallery, located on the second floor, pre-security.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity to ask questions and learn more about VSO’s work at the airport and in the community.

“The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations, which aren’t always the most effective times for relationship building with the community,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “Events like Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.”

DAB partners with VSO for law enforcement services at the county-managed airport, which includes 24-hour coverage with a K9 team—the airport has four K9 teams in all.  In 2022, Airport and VSO leadership launched the K9s and K9s program, which includes plush toy dogs in the likeness of the K9 officers.

“The K9s and K9s program was launched so that VSO deputies could have a fun and friendly way to interact with the traveling public,” said Joanne Magley, director of the airport’s Air Service, Marketing & Customer Experience division.

“Deputies can give these plush toys to passengers or others at the airport, which helps to promote positive interactions and may help people feel less intimidated by the presence of law enforcement,” said Magley.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the county, as local law enforcement departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between law enforcement officers and community members, one cup of coffee at a time.
