Daytona Beach International Airport revving up for race fans

The DAYTONA 500 is fast approaching, and the racing experience has taken off at Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB). Race fans and other airport visitors flying into Daytona Beach will have plenty of selfie opportunities including the No. 43 Daniel Dye race truck, a NEW Daytona International Speedway race car in baggage claim, and bright LED welcome signs.

Back for a second year is the No. 43 truck driven by Daniel Dye, which is part of the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. The No. 43 will be on display at the airport Feb. 13 – 17 in the airport’s front entrance.

Also, a new race car is on display in baggage claim-- a retired NASCAR race car.

To keep up with the demand of fans traveling to the area for the big race, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines added special event flights. Delta added flights from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Detroit’s Metro Airport (DTW) Feb. 16 & 19. The airline also added a fifth trip out of its hub in Atlanta on Feb. 19.

American Airlines added flights from Dallas-Fort Worth, TX (DFW) Feb. 15, 16, and 19; and Washington, D.C. (DCA) Feb. 16 & 19. American will also bring in larger aircraft for flights from its hub in Charlotte, NC (CLT).

“We are thrilled our legacy carriers added non-stop flights to four of our top markets for our destination’s largest event of the year,” said Joanne Magley, the airport’s director of air service, marketing & customer experience. “DAB is the closest airport to any major sports stadium in the United States, so travelers flying here for the Daytona 500 will have the fastest track to the action,” said Magley.

Due to the Daytona 500 event on Sunday, Feb. 18, there will be traffic congestion surrounding the airport prior to the start of the race. Departing passengers should allow for extra time to get to the airport and should avoid International Speedway Boulevard between Clyde Morris Boulevard and I-95.

On Monday, Feb. 19, between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 pm, there will be larger than usual crowds departing DAB, resulting in 30 – 45-minute wait times in the security checkpoint line. Travelers should arrive early and allow extra time to get through security.
